Premiering at the Pantry Playhouse in Kingston in September 2007, Aston Cooke’s theatrical production, Concubine? took to the stage overseas recently. The five member cast travelled to South Florida late last month for several performances.
The dramatic comedy had two final shows, March 15th at Coral Reef High School and on March 16th at Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The last performance for the play should have been on March 15th, but organisers had to include another show on March 16th to accommodate additional persons who wanted to see the play.
Concubine? tells the story of Patsy and Winston who have been living together for 15 years in a common-law relationship in Jamaica. As the relationship continues to mature after 15 years, Patsy (Dahlia Harris) feels that the time is ideal for her and Winston (Christopher McFarlane) to get married.
Her desire to become his wife is boosted when she finds an engagement ring among his clothing. She quickly tells her friend Shelly (Terri Salmon) that she found the ring and they both become excited.
Nonetheless, Patsy later finds out that the ring is not meant for her, but for Winston’s new love interest, Lisa (Marsha Campbell), the Human Resources Manager at his workplace.
Also, to make matters worse, Winston wants Patsy to leave the house which she has called home for 15 years, so that his wife to be, Lisa, may move in. Patsy and Shelly then conspire to find out who Lisa is, through Dessie (Jerry Benzwick), Winston’s friend.
