After losing to Barbados last year in a close match, the Jamaican under 16 netball team, the junior “Sunshine Girls”, went to the Jean Pierre Netball championships with a vengeance. The competition was held in Antigua, and the Jamaicans showed that they are the Caribbean netball champions in all age groups.
The Jamaican team met Barbados in the finals and they were bent on not having history repeat itself, and that they did. Both of the teams were unbeaten up to the point of finals and both teams had a point to make. The junior Sunshine Girls, however, proved to be too much for the Barbados team as they easily defeated them 38 points to 18.
The Jamaican team’s leading goal scorer was Mara Dean as she scored 22 from 29 attempts and was strongly supported by teammate Deneen Taylor who scored 14 from 16 attempts. The track to the trophy was a breeze for the girls as the smoothly went through all the other teams.
The Jamaicans defeated St. Lucia 45 – 12, Antigua 62-6, Trinidad and Tobago 40-15, Grenada 51-7, St. Vincent and the Grenadines 56-18, and Dominica 54-14...Not only did the Jamaicans win the championship trophy but they also dominated the special awards ceremony.
They copped awards for the Best Defensive team, Most Accurate shooting team, Best Goal average. Christina Salmon took the title of Most Valuable Player and Top Goal shooter and the Youngest Academic Achiever Award went to Lionel McNaughton.
