Considered one of Jamaica’s icons in broadcasting, film and theatre, Leonie Forbes has captivated audiences both locally and internationally for five decades with her professionalism, charm and finesse. Showing no signs of slowing down any time soon, her latest feature film, A Winter Tale is now playing in Jamaican cinemas.

The film’s plot tells the story of a Black men’s support group formed in a Caribbean takeout restaurant in Canada following the killing of a young boy by a stray bullet. Forbes “becomes” the sympathetic “Miss G”, the owner of the restaurant that the men use as their regular meeting place and offers her support in any way.

Forbes explains that the filmmaking experience wasn’t the customary one, but the approach taken by the filmmakers worked nonetheless. She says, “This film was an experience. We did workshops and a play before the film was made. The cast members knew each other and shared experiences. It wasn’t the usual film experience, but it worked”.

She said that the film was completed in the earlier months of 2007; it premiered at the Reel World Toronto Film Festival and won an award for excellence. A Winter Tale also opened the 15th Annual African Diaspora Film Festival in New York.

A Winter Tale is Forbes’ 20th film. She has appeared in other films such as, Glory to Gloriana (2006), Lord Have Mercy! (2003), Tangled Web (2003), Guttaperc (1998), Shattered Image (1998), and Mother (1998).
