The inaugural University of Technology (UTech) international track and field invitation was a success, despite no shows in certain events.
The meet was well attended as patrons turned out to see Jamaican athletes such as Sherone Simpson and Asafa Powell, the world’s Fastest Man and the island’s Sportsman of the Year for 2007. The event was held as a part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the University.
The meet saw athletes from many local, regional and international Universities and Colleges. The event had competitors in the 100, 200, 400 and 800m as well as in the sprint hurdles and mile relays. In the field events there were contestants in the long jump, high jump and the javelin.
Sherone Simpson, who was the fastest woman in 2006, proclaimed to the crowd that she was back as she finished the 400m in 51.25 seconds. Bridgette Foster Hilton also made a comeback after a long break due to her struggles with injuries, winning the 110m hurdles in 13.16 while Nestar Carter also of Jamaica finished the female 200m in 20.38 seconds.
Asafa Powell led the MVP men’s quartet in the 4X100 m to lower the time set this year by Hinds community college in Mississippi. The team finished 39.22 seconds lower than 39.38 seconds set by Hinds. In the women’s event GC Foster bettered the 44.26 set by Australia in January with a time of 44.12 seconds.
The organizers of the event promised to make the event an annual one but say that they will ensure that athletes perform in the events for which they are advertised..
