About the Author
I am Marvia Lawes, an ordained Minister of the Jamaica Baptist Union. I now serve as Missioner Pastor of the First Isthmian Baptist Church in Colon, Panama and provide oversight to four (4) Baptist Missions, in Costa Abajo, Colon.
The Jamaica Baptist Union (JBU) and First Isthmian Baptist Church in Colon, Panama have strong historical connections. These connections extend all the way back to the construction of the Panama Canal which attracted Jamaicans to Panama to work in and around the Canal. The relationship between Baptists in these two countries created this opportunity for me to work and reside in Panama.

“Marvia’s Panama Journal”, is simply what its name suggests. It is an online Journal of personal reflections on my experiences as a woman Missioner Pastor here in Panama. Although I am not the first Missioner Pastor of the JBU to serve this church, being the first woman from the JBU and the first woman to pastor a Baptist church in Panama comes with unique challenges. In the case of the latter, we are seeing a break in 114 years of traditional Baptist practice against women in the pastorate. As a historian, even if it is not an enviable position to be in, I still believe the entire experience is worth recording.
Another purpose of this blog is to keep in touch with you - my family, friends and colleagues in ministry. Here in one place, I get to tell all of you the same things at the same time. After a while saying the same thing repeatedly does cause it to lose some of its quality. By posting them here, all will receive my thoughts and stories firsthand.
I share with you my thoughts on a variety of issues including, Panama religion, Panama culture, women in the ordained ministry the First Isthmian Baptist church, Panama Baptists and of course updates on the work at the Baptist missions in Costa Abajo, Colon. I do anticipate receiving your comments and general feedback.
