The month of February has been declared ‘Reggae Month’ by Prime Minister, Hon Bruce Golding. “Reggae is so powerful; people across the world embrace it. It is the medium we have used to declare our position against oppression and suffering. It is a declaration of love,” said Golding at the press launch of Reggae Month.

He said that a month of endeavours was vital in an effort to garner attention towards Reggae music and its components from the international community.

The official proclamation will be made by Governor-General, His Excellency Professor Sir Kenneth Hall on Thursday January 24. There will be a number of events to highlight the inaugural Reggae Month celebrations. Activities will begin with the Bob Marley Birthday Dinner on February 6 followed by a Reggae Film Festival from February 15 to 17.

Hon Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth, and Sports, said that the “...film festival will feature films that have reggae music as the subject, storyline or content and focusing on film as an aspect of Jamaica’s music culture”.

An Africa-Unite-Smile Jamaica Concert, organized by Rita Marley and the Bob Marley foundation, will be held at the James Bond Beach in Oracabessa on February 23.  In addition, there will be a Global Reggae Conference to be hosted by the University of the West Indies from February 18 to 24.  The theme for the Conference will be “Global Reggae: Jamaican Popular Music A Yard and Abroad”.

The Reggae Boyz will play a football match against Costa Rica and the inaugural Reggae Academy Awards show organized by the Recording Industry Association of Jamaica (RIAJam) is scheduled at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston on February 24.

The Academy Awards show will be preceded by a series of music fraternity activities including a road tour and several symposia on the music fraternity.
