The newly constructed Half Way Tree Transportation Centre was officially opened on January 12th by Prime Minister, Bruce Golding. Several transportation changes have been made since the opening of the centre including the introduction of a colour coding system. The system allows commuters to easily identify their routes through five colours.

Service Planning Manager at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC), Kirk Finnikin said, “We have a five- colour scheme and they signify different routes based on the direction that these routes will be travelling”. The five operational colours are, blue, green, purple, red, and yellow.

Passenger tickets are also colour coded. Adults are provided with blue tickets, while disabled persons, the elderly, and children use pink tickets. The centre facilitates 101 Jamaica Urban Transit buses travelling to 63 routes in the Corporate Area, Portmore and Spanish Town. The commodious centre has two levels with 17 commercial shops, 14 of which are located on the lower level.

A variety of services are offered including, cell phone services, a pharmacy, a barbershop, and a beauty salon. The lower level also contains ventilators, route maps, security cameras, and a real time bus schedule.

Operators of the centre are able to keep abreast of the location of buses, as they are equipped with special tracking devices that will alert them of the exact location of the buses. The construction of the centre was managed by the Port Authority of Jamaica, nonetheless, the centre is owned by the Ministry of Transport and Works.

Minister of Transport, Mike Henry, commented, “We are definitely moving in the direction of a First World public bus service”. The centre was constructed by Jamaican workers but was funded by the Belgian government at a cost of $ 4.3 billion.
