McIlroy shares Hong Kong lead

World number two Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland launched his quest for a first victory at the UBS Hong Kong Open with a masterful six-under-par 64 for the joint first round lead on Thursday.
The reigning U.S. Open champion tamed swirling winds at the Hong Kong Golf Club to sink six birdies and was joined at the top of the leaderboard by big-hitting Spaniard Alvaro Quiros and England’s David Horsey.( Titleist 712 CB Irons)
Two-time champion Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain maintained his love-affair with the UBS Hong Kong Open with a solid 65 to trail by one while Asia’s best finishers were current Asian Tour number one Juvic Pagusan of the Philippines, Korean star Y.E. Yang and Thailand’s Kiradech Aphibarnrat on 68s.

Stanley eager to move on

Kyle Stanley is keen to put the collapse that cost him the Farmers Insurance Open last week behind him.
The American seemed to be heading for his first PGA Tour victory after finding himself five shots clear heading into the final round at Torery Pines and still leading by three with only one hole to play Titleist 712 AP2 Irons on Sunday.
But instead of triumph, he suffered an agonising defeat as he made a triple-bogey eight at the 18th to send him into a play-off with Brandt Snedeker - which he promptly lost.
The crushing blow left him in tears afterwards, but he’s vowed to put the loss behind him and start building again.
“I’m just going to continue to work hard with Titleist 712 AP2 Irons and do what I can do each day to get better, and as long as I continue to do that, I’ll be back,” Stanley said in Phoenix on Tuesday, where he is preparing for this week’s Phoenix Open.
Stanley added that he never had any intention of pulling out of this week’s tournament.
“If anything probably the opposite,” he said. “Nothing has changed and nothing is changing.”
At one stage on Sunday, Stanley found himself a full seven shots ahead, but his lead soon started evaporating - and nowhere quicker than at that fateful 18th hole after a mishit Titleist 712 AP2 Irons shot to the green sent his ball spinning into the water..
“It’s a crazy game. It can love you, it can hate you,” said Stanley.
He added that he’d been “overwhelmed” by the support he had received, both from the fans and his fellow pros, many of whom took to Twitter to express their empathy.

Harrington, 40, and caddie Ronan Flood were seated in the business section of an Etihad Airways A330-200 aircraft that was scheduled to fly them home to Dublin from the Dhabi Airport when the incident occurred, the Dublin Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

The incident led to big disruptions of flights from the busy Emirates hub, with dozens of flights being either delayed or diverted.

Rory McIlroy is gearing up to spend most of his time this week working on his driving ahead of next week’s Dubai Desert Classic.
The new World No 2 came close to winning in Abu Dhabi last weekend when he finished one shot ahead of Tiger Woods and one behind surprise winner Robert Rock.And this despite having to take a two-shot penalty for carelessly wiping sand off the fringe of a green during Friday’s second round.
But the 22-year-old Northern Irishman felt there were a host of positives to take away from Abu Dhabi while admitting he still had some work to do with his Titleist 910 D3 Driver.

Just eleven months after crashing to an 88 and joint last place in the South African Open, Lyle Rowe has had the thrill of leading the event.

O’Hara, Kruger lead at Serengeti

Scot Steven O’Hara and South African Jbe Kruger were tied for the lead midway through Thursday’s first round of the SA Open Championship at Serengeti .
At 134th on The Race to Dubai standings, the 31 year old needs a top four finish this week to keep his European Tour card next year and his opening 7-under par 65 has put him on track to achieving just that.
Clubhouse leaders O’Hara and Kruger are a shot clear of two-time US and SA Open champion Retief Goosen,
But five-time SA Open champion Ernie Els was just setting off in his Left Handed TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC Irons defence.
O’Hara eagled the long eighth and had six birdies, his only dropped shot coming on the 445 yard fourth.
