▽再発多い従来法
　虫歯は口の中にいる無数の菌が食べかすなどから酸をつくり、酸が歯を溶かすことで起きる。歯の表面の硬いエナメル質を溶かすと、その下の象牙質に侵入。そのまま治療しないで放置すると血管や神経が通っている歯髄にまで達する。
　虫歯が無機質のエナメル質にとどまっているうちは痛みはない。しかし象牙質は象牙細管という細い管で歯髄につながっており、虫歯がここまで進むと痛みを感じるようになる。
　菌に侵された象牙質は変色して軟らかくなるため軟化象牙質と呼ばれ、従来の歯科機器
ではこの部分をすべて取り除くのが常識。虫歯がさらに歯髄にまで進行すると感染した歯髄を抜く治療なども必要になる。
　だが、３Ｍｉｘ－ＭＰ法の開発者の１人で、仙台市で歯科医院を開く宅重豊彦（たくしげ・とよひこ）氏は「従来の治療法では完全な無菌化歯科材料
は困難で、口腔内カメラ
虫歯が再発することが多い」と指摘する。実際、詰め物の下に再び虫歯ができたり、超音波洗浄機
で治療した歯の根の部分に膿（うみ）がたまったりして、超音波スケーラー
再治療を受けた経験のある人は多いだろう。

　▽抗菌剤を置くだけ
　宅重氏によると、これは感染した象牙質を削り取る従来の方法では周囲の象牙細管の奥にまで入り込んだ菌をすべて取り除くことができないため。菌を残さないよう多めに削り取ったり、削った後に消毒したりするが、それでも完全に無菌化することは難しいという。
　これに対し、３Ｍｉｘ－ＭＰ法は病巣を取り除かずに殺菌して自然修復を促すのが特徴。軟化象牙質や感染した歯髄もできるだけ削ったり抜いたりしないで残す。代わりにメトロニダゾール、ミノサイクリン、シプロフロキサシンという３種類の抗菌剤を調合して虫歯の穴に置き、そのまま穴をふさぐ。
　こうするだけで抗菌剤が歯の隅々に浸透して歯髄を含む歯全体を無菌化。ほとんどの場合、１回の治療で虫歯の痛みはなくなり進行も止まる。大きく削ったり歯髄を抜いたりすることによるトラブルがない上、削らずに残した軟化象牙質もカルシウムが沈着するなどして再び硬くなるという。

　▽３種の調合が効果
　３種類の抗菌剤の組み合わせを発見したのは新潟大学歯学部の星野悦郎（ほしの・えつろう）教授。虫歯の原因菌には多くの種類があり、１つの抗菌剤ですべての菌を殺すことはできなかったが、３種類を組み合わせることで１００％殺菌することに成功した。当初は根管治療
効果が安定しなかったが、宅重氏がマクロゴールとプロピレングリコールという２つの基剤歯科レントゲン
を混ぜることで、抗菌剤が患部に効率よく届くように改良した。

1 歯科機器で全体を除菌するために、細菌叢の総入れ替えをすることにより口腔内カメラは歯周病関連細菌の再感染を防ぐことが可能です。１日で部分的に、歯石除去などを行う方法は、他の部位に細菌が残ってしまいます。

ブラッシングの指導や食生活の指導と併行して、超音波洗浄機で歯垢や歯石を除去します。超音波スケーラーの目的のためにPMTCも行います。PMTCはブラシ等やポリッシャーを用いて歯の表面を磨くことです。

ひどい虫歯の治療法
最初のうちは、所々が虫歯になっていても、痛くないからそのうち治そうと思って放置している方は案外多いものです。ところが虫歯は自然治癒はしませんので、気がついたら、口中がひどい虫歯で、文字通りボロボロになってしまっている方もいます。もうそうなると、ひどい虫歯の歯は抜かれてしまうのではないか、歯医者さんに何と言われるだろうかなどといろいろな考えが先に立ってしまい、怖かったり恥ずかしかったりで歯科医院へも行けなくなってしまい、自分でもどうしていいか分からなくなってしまいます。
