A strong team of stakeholders have purposed to emphatically score multiple goals as the WASH United campaign kicks off in Uganda on 7th July, 2010. The stakeholders who included representatives of the government ministry responsible for water and sanitation, the national sector steering organs, civil society organizations and the donor community pledged commitment and support to the WASH United drive.
Wash United Uganda is coordinated by the Uganda Water and Sanitation NGO Network (UWASNET) with Youth Social Work Association (YSA) as lead implementer. Other implementing partners are: Divine Waters, CIDI and Kibuku Women and Youth Organisation. The campaign will cover the districts of Kampala, Gulu, Lira and Kibuku.
Besides the flag vessel of football, the campaign will feature a poster campaign also covering the local languages in the target districts. A national campaign launch is in the offing.
The Water and Sanitation Crisis in Uganda
In 2004 Uganda´s policy already set ambitious national targets to increase the access to safe water and sanitation to 100 % in urban areas and 77 % in rural areas by 2015. Although the water and sanitation situation has improved over the last 10 years, close to 30 % of the population in Uganda still live without access to safe, clean water. Only 48 % have access to improved sanitation.
Water and sanitation play a crucial role in adressing poverty. Without access to water and sanitation, time spent on water collection, household income spent on medical treatment and water purchase, contribute to keeping people in poverty.
