Chris Gayle is a member of the Jamaican and West Indian cricket teams. He is a specialist opening left-handed batsman who can also bowl a more than handy spell of spin (right-arm off break).
At 6’ 2”, Chris is one of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in the game and has a wide array of shots that have been on display in some of the most scintillating stroke play that we have seen both at the regional and international levels.
Chris Gayle was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1979, and after representing Jamaica at age 19, went on to represent the West Indies Youth team. He was drafted into the West Indies one day senior cricket team in September, 1999, and just 6 moths after, was called up to represent the Test side.
To date, he has played 68 Test matches and 171 ODIs scoring 4,479 and 6048 at an average of 38.28 and 33.03 respectively. Using the measure by which great batsmen are judged, Chris Gayle with his pugnacious, all-or-nothing style has scored 7 centuries in Tests and 15 centuries in the one day version of the game, his top scores being 317 and 153 respectively.
In terms of bowling, the Jamaican lefthander, especially with the deficiencies in the West Indies team over the last few years, has proven a real asset to the team. He has many times in Tests broken key partnerships and has always been a dependable wicket taker and economic bowler in ODIs. So far, his record stands at 59 wickets in Tests and 139 in ODIs with best bowling figures of 5 for 34 and 5 for 46 respectively.
In the cricketing world Chris Gayle is known as a cool customer with probably his most memorable performance on the cricket field being the 6 fours in one over against England off Matthew Hoggard in 2004.
If there are any chinks in Chris Gayle’s armour, it would have to be his less than impressive footwork, a weakness that has seen in all kinds of bother at the crease at times. Chris is not one to let that stand in the way though, he has remained positive and believe wholeheartedly that he and the West Indies team will one day reign supreme as they have done before. Only time will tell!
