This is the title of a movie I watched almost two years ago, but depicts what obtains presently in the economy. The plot of the story surrounded the sequence of events occurring in the lives of a middle class couple, as they adjust to life after being forced into unemployment.

The pleasant feelings you experience when you purchase the item are disconnected from the unpleasant or painful feelings of making the payment when you get the credit card statement. Credit card companies and lending institutions offer enticing opportunities for people to incur debt.

Imagine someone borrowing/renting your pristine car, valued at JA$10M, for a week. In the glove compartment is your clear transferable title. He backs out the driveway, waves and goes down the road, stops briefly, sticks a FOR SALE sign on the windshield and proceeds on his journey.

A bull grazing on a grassy slope sees a herd in the valley below all running in a stampede. He runs down the slope and joins the procession at full speed. Glancing to the bull running beside him he asks “what’s all this about? why the stampede?”. Panting the other responds “I don’t know! I was grazing, saw these guys running and decided to join the herd and now I’m just following the ass in front of me!”

On my first trip to the United States I went into a department store to purchase an item. The young miss ringing up the cash register asked me “ and how will you be paying sir?” to which I replied “cash!” and produced a $100 note, arm outstretched to pay. Her eyes widened in amazement and I noticed that there was no reciprocating alacrity to take the note. She finally spluttered “don’t you have anything smaller?”

The Olympics are now over. The joy of a nation will be ringing in each and every one of our present crop of returning Olympians. Usain Bolt has been crowned “the world’s fastest man”. All of our athletes have been recognized for their participation and achievements. Now what lies ahead?

Since the start of the year globally there has been an alarming increase in the prices of basic food and grain as well as oil. The latter, now weekly reaching new record prices. The basic questions families around the globe are asking is: should we fill up the car or shopping cart? In all of this volatility there are opportunities for making positive medium term investment decisions.
